#BYOD4L 2016 at #LSTM: This weeks drop in sessions

The January gloom is upon us once again but fear not a ray of sunshine is here to cut through the darkness. Once again LSTM are one of 12 UK Higher Education Institutions taking part in the fourth iteration of the open online course BYOD4L (Bring Your Own Devices 4 Learning). The TEL Unit in conjunction with colleagues from across the institution have organised a range of informal, face to face events during the week to compliment what is happening online.  If you would like to get involved in any of these events then please click on the links below to sign up. Contact the TEL Unit for further information on tel@lstmed.ac.uk We look forward to connecting with you!

Making the most of your Mobile (All Staff event)

Time: 10:00 am - 12:30 pm (includes Lunch)

Venue: Wolfson Meeting Room 1

Date: Monday 11th January 2016

During the holiday period, you may have been fortunate to have purchased or received a shiny new mobile device. We would like to help you start making the most of using this device. LSTM now has access to an increasing number of mobile apps to support teaching and learning such as Turnitin, and Vital (Blackboard Learn), Binder, Eportfolio and Skype for Business however there are many more useful apps out there to help you at work and play. We will also be demonstrating Apple TV, Chromecast and Google Cardboard. If you have a device with internet access such as a smartphone, tablet or iPod Touch, then bring them along to this drop-in session.  This event will be supported by staff from the Technology Enhanced Learning Unit, IT services and Serious Gaming Initiative

## This is a drop in session but please sign up beforehand as we will be providing lunch.##

BYOD4L through video (BYOD4L-TV)

Date: Tuesday 12th January
Time: 11am – 12.30pm
Venue: Wolfson Meeting Room 9

We're all carrying video recorders around with us these days, be they smart phones, tablets, laptops, stills cameras or webcams. With the ubiquity of these simple to use devices in our everyday lives, there is a compelling case to use these same devices to provide new perspectives and insights for our students. However we often don't feel confident about the quality of videos produced or are impeded by technical concerns such as how to share these videos with our students.
This hands-on session aims to give you more confidence about producing videos in your teaching by:

  • Choosing an appropriate style of video to use
  • Planning your video appropriately
  • Quick tips on improving image quality (for any device) to give a professional look
  • How to share videos with your students
  • Information about other support on offer
  • At the session we will have a range of cameras for participants to use to try out techniques with, but please feel free to bring your own device such as a smart phone.
