The
January gloom is upon us once again but fear not a ray of sunshine is here to
cut through the darkness. Once again LSTM are one of 12 UK Higher Education
Institutions taking part in the fourth iteration of the open online course BYOD4L (Bring Your Own Devices 4
Learning). The TEL Unit in
conjunction with colleagues from across the
institution have organised a range of informal,
face to face events during the week to compliment what is happening
online. If you would like to get involved in any of these events then

Making the most of your Mobile (All Staff event)
Time: 10:00 am - 12:30 pm (includes Lunch)
Venue: Wolfson Meeting Room 1
Date: Monday 11th January 2016
During the holiday period, you may have been fortunate to have
purchased or received a shiny new mobile device. We would like to help you
start making the most of using this device. LSTM now has access to an
increasing number of mobile apps to support teaching and learning such as Turnitin,
and Vital (Blackboard Learn), Binder, Eportfolio and Skype for Business however
there are many more useful apps out there to help you at work and play. We will
also be demonstrating Apple TV, Chromecast and Google
Cardboard. If you have a device with internet access such as a smartphone,
tablet or iPod Touch, then bring them along to this drop-in session. This
event will be supported by staff from the Technology Enhanced Learning Unit,
IT services and Serious Gaming Initiative

BYOD4L through video (BYOD4L-TV)
Date: Tuesday 12th January
Time: 11am – 12.30pm
Venue: Wolfson Meeting Room 9
We're all carrying video recorders around with us these days, be they smart phones, tablets, laptops, stills cameras or webcams. With the ubiquity of these simple to use devices in our everyday lives, there is a compelling case to use these same devices to provide new perspectives and insights for our students. However we often don't feel confident about the quality of videos produced or are impeded by technical concerns such as how to share these videos with our students.
This hands-on session aims to give you more confidence about producing videos in your teaching by:

- Choosing an appropriate style of video to use
- Planning your video appropriately
- Quick tips on improving image quality (for any device) to give a professional look
- How to share videos with your students
- Information about other support on offer
- At the session we will have a range of cameras for participants to use to try out techniques with, but please feel free to bring your own device such as a smart phone.

Connecting together with BYOD4L
Date: Thursday 14th

Venue: Fergusson PC Lab
This face-to-face event will provide a focus for staff and
students undertaking the BYOD4L open course. Come along and find out how your
colleagues are getting on with the tweet chats, share your new app discoveries
and talk about ways in which we can harness the power of mobile to support
teaching and learning at LSTM.

Marking offline with your iPad
Date: Friday 16th January 2016
Time: 11.30am - 12.30pm
Venue: Fergusson PC Lab
A practical session of using the Turnitin app on the iPad to mark
assignments without being online. Staff will carry out a number of exercises to
give them basic skills in using the Grademark and Originality tools from their
iPad, as well as discuss how they can use this for their current marking. This
event will be supported by staff from the Technology Enhanced Learning Unit
(TEL)
